Zendaya Becomes The Youngest Actress To Win An Emmy As Lead In A Drama Series In The TV Academy’s History

At the age of 24 years old, Zendaya became the youngest woman to win an Emmy in the television academy’s history at the 72nd Emmy Awards on Sunday night. A gleeful Zendaya nabbed the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Rue Bennett on Euphoria.

“I want to say thank you to the TV Academy, to all the other incredible women in this category,” Zendaya said while accepting her Emmy from home. “I admire you all so much. This is pretty crazy. I don’t really cry. Thank you, HBO, and A24 for all your support. Thank you to my family and my team. I’m really grateful to have all of you here.” Before Zendaya became the youngest actress to win an Emmy in the drama series category, Comer had the title when she won the award last year at the age of 26. This is Zendaya’s first time winning an Emmy.

The category was filled with heavy hitter contenders, including Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Olivia Colman (The Crown), Laura Linney (Ozark), Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show), and Jodie Comer (Killing Eve). The series also took home Emmys for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup (Non-Prosthetic) and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.

“I know this feels like a really weird time to be celebrating,” an emotional Zendaya said. “I just want to say there is hope in the young people out there — I know that our TV show doesn’t always feel like a great example of that, but there is hope in the young people. I just want to say to all my peers out there doing the work in the streets, I see you, I admire you.”
