For the first time ever, business review company Yelp will be creating a search filter that will allow users to view women-owned businesses.
The new feature comes after Yelp users began demanding the ability to see listings of businesses owned by women. Yelp noticed that there was also an increase in reviews of women-owned businesses by 50 percent since 2015.
The feature will be added to the website and app on for users on International Women’s Day, March 8. The women-owned attribute will be a selectable option on business profiles.
“We’re hopeful that this attribute not only makes it easier to identify and connect with great women-owned businesses on Yelp, but that it also drives more dollars directly to the bottom line for more female entrepreneurs. It’s an honor to be able to help women create economic sustainability for themselves, as well as for their families and communities,” says Emily Washcovick, Senior Field Marketing Manager of Yelp.
In celebration of female owners, Yelp also released a list of top 100 women-owned businesses across the United States, including Unexpected Atlanta Walking Tours (Atlanta, GA), The Bird House (Brooklyn, NY), The Bead Shop (New Orleans, LA), and Philly Home Girls (Philadelphia, PA).
In the last few years, the company has added innovative features to their filter tool to keep up with the competition. These features include “Hot and New”, “Liked by Vegetarians”, “Liked by 30-somethings”, and “Gender Neutral Restrooms”.
