After all the tumultuous challenges that have hindered the excitement of enjoying professional football, some fans are eager for the sport to come back. What better way to kick-off the 2020 National Football League season than with Deshaun Watson and the Houston Texans versus Patrick Mahomes and the Defending Super Bowl Champions, Kansas City Chiefs. In the words of Aubrey Graham, “What a time to be alive.”
Watson versus Mahomes is packed with plenty of storylines leaving us with many questions that are sure to get answered on Sept. 10. The questions are extensive, too. For instance, how will the Texans respond after blowing a 24-0 lead in the division round of the playoffs with the Chiefs? Or, how will Watson do without Deandre Hopkins as his number one receiver, especially since Bill O’Brien decided to replace top tier production with speed at the wide receiver position, adding Brandin Cooks and Randall Cobb?
How will new Defensive Coordinator Anthony Weaver do against the Chiefs’ high-powered offense with his installation of a Rex Ryan and Romeo Crennel hybrid style defense? Will Running Back David Johnson return to his 2016 form and replace the production left by Carlos Hyde’s absence? Will Kansas City suffer from Super Bowl Hangover and come out flat? Is the Chiefs secondary able to defend 4.3 speed across the board at the receiver positions? How will the non-existence of a preseason affect both teams?
All will be answered in due time. Regardless, we are in for a treat as two of the NFL’s rising young clutch performers are going head to head for the third time in their careers with both of them holding a victory over one another.
Even though Mahomes’ victory does hold more weight because it propelled the Chiefs to the AFC Championship game, no extra motivation was needed for the Texans for this rematch. After giving up 28 points in one quarter to the opposition in a game, they would go on to lose 51-31. The Texans have been dealing with a bad taste left in their mouth for the past nine months.
To add salt to the wound, a few weeks ago, the Chiefs players received their championship rings and inside were the scores, along with the logos, of the teams they defeated on their way to becoming crowned champions of the NFL.
Due to the pandemic, Arrowhead Stadium should be at 20% capacity for social distancing, but there will still be plenty of sparks throughout the game with millions watching at home. It’s Deshaun Watson, also known as the magician “Houston Houdini,” versus Patrick “Mahomeboy” Mahomes, round III.
Coverage for the Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs game begins at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC. For those who can’t take another coronavirus news report or your lady’s reality TV shows, football is back!!!
