Voiceover Cast Selected For Upcoming Film Based On ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Video Game, Set For Christmas 2022 Release

It’s official. The voiceover cast has been selected for Nintendo’s upcoming animated pic based on Super Mario Bros., one of the highest selling video games in the history of the gaming industry. Shigeru Miyamoto, video game designer and Nintendo director, made an official video announcement revealing the key cast and release date.

The Illumination and Universal film will star Chris Pratt in the lead role of Mario, while Charlie Day will co-lead as his brother, Luigi. Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan-Michael Key, and Seth Rogen are also on the star-studded bill.

Donkey Kong, another infamous Nintendo character, will be featured in the film and voiced by Rogen. Key will voice Toad, the Mushroom Kingdom guardian. Charles Martinet, who does the original voice of Mario used in the video game, will have special cameos throughout the pic.

Super Mario Bros: The Movie will stick close to the original story presented in the video game. The plumbing brothers, Mario and Luigi, go on a risky adventure to rescue Princess Peach (Taylor-Joy) from the egregious Bowser (Black) and his cronies.

“We are collaborating with Chris [Meledandri] and his experienced team to not just create a character licensed film, but a new piece of entertainment which brings Super Mario Bros. to life on the screen, and allows everyone to enjoy whether or not they know about the game. The production so far is constructive and going very well, and both parties are learning a lot from each other. We humbly ask that fans wait just a little longer for the premiere, and we hope they look forward to seeing the unique characters from Super Mario Bros. on the big screen,” said Miyamoto.

The premiere date of the film has been set for the week of Christmas on Dec. 21, 2022.
