Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey will be allowing employees of the social media company to work from home going forward. The tech company sent an email on Tuesday to its employees notifying them of the permanent change.
“We were uniquely positioned to respond quickly and allow folks to work from home given our emphasis on decentralization and supporting a distributed workforce capable of working from anywhere,” a representative of the company said.
“The past few months have proven we can make that work. So if our employees are in a role and situation that enables them to work from home and they want to continue to do so forever, we will make that happen. If not, our offices will be their warm and welcoming selves, with some additional precautions, when we feel it’s safe to return.”
Twitter had already forecasted that its offices would remain closed until September in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. All in-person company events have been canceled for the remainder of the year.
Any employees with business that is required to take place in the workplace will have to follow specific guidelines to practice safe social distancing and good hygiene.
The news comes as states are starting to ease their stay-at-home orders and open their economies back up in phases.
Remote work was already a part of the fabric of Silicon Valley, but COVID-19 coerced the tech companies into transitioning to the work model for all employees sooner than intended. Both Google and Facebook will allow employees to work from home until 2021.
