Tina Knowles-Lawson always appears to be a graceful and strong woman, even in the midst of adversity. But, she recalls a time when she was “devastated” about getting a divorce after three decades of marriage and her daughters, Beyonce, Solange and Kelly, came to the rescue to help her through.
Mrs. Tina appeared on OWN’s Girlfriends Check In, alongside Lynn Whitfield, Vanessa Bell Calloway and Beverly Johnson. The ladies were in the middle of discussing the importance of having daughters when Knowles-Lawson shared her touching story.
“When I went through my divorce, I was devastated after 33 years of marriage,” Knowles-Lawson said. “Not because I wanted to stay in the marriage, but just because I was like ‘Oh, my God, I failed at this. You know, I’m 59 years old.’ They were my balm. They came over and looked at old movies with me, and we ate ice cream all night.”
Mrs. Tina was married to former Destiny’s Child manager Mathew Knowles. The couple separated in 2009, but then reconciled briefly for two years before finalizing their divorce in 2011.
“They let me feel sorry for myself for a short period of time, and then they were like, ‘Momma, you a bad girl,” she continued. “‘You shouldn’t be feeling like life is over for you, that God has something for you.”
Eventually, Mrs. Tina would get her groove back and meet the actor Richard Lawson, who she would marry in 2015. The Houston-bred beauty is an example of a woman who turned tragedy into triumph all while making it look easy.
