Fans of Texas football are elated by the news that the No. 1 high school football player will be a Longhorn in the upcoming college football season. Arch Manning, 18, made the announcement on Twitter early on Thursday morning, simply stating that he “committed to the University of Texas. #HookEm.”
The New Orleans’ Isidore Newman High School quarterback is the top football athlete of the 2023 class. He had the option of playing for some of the best programs in the land, including the Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers, Virginia Cavaliers, and Georgia Bulldogs, to name a few.
For Texas coach Steve Sarkisian, recruiting Manning is a significant signal to the world of college football. Manning’s commitment to UT Austin hallmarks the first recruit of a No. 1 overall ranking player since the Vince Young days. It’s also the first time that the Longhorns have nabbed a top 20 quarterback in the last decade.
While some Texas deflectors are calling the move “an awful choice,” Manning comes from a line of superior athletes. Cooper Manning, former wide receiver for the University of Mississippi or Ole Miss, is Manning’s father, who also is the brother of NFL stars Eli and Peyton Manning.
The 5-star recruit’s grandfather just so happens to be the former New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning, 73. If this doesn’t change the course for Texas, what will?
