‘The Farewell’ Secures Distribution Deal To Expand In China Market

A24’s The Farewell just signed a major deal to be distributed in China. The independent film will be distributed through mega entertainment ticketing firm Maoyan.

The film has been doing well in box office, grossing $17.7 million domestically and $1.9 million internationally. Released this past summer, the dramedy rolled out to seven markets in the U.S. with rave reviews.

On Rotten Tomatoes, audiences scored the film at 87% and critics at 99%. The Farewell was a hit at Sundance and the Atlanta Film Festival. The film is scheduled for a wide release on November 22nd.

Directed and written by Lulu Wang, The Farewell is about a Chinese family that finds out the matriarch doesn’t have long to live but doesn’t let her know her fate.

In order to celebrate their grandmother, they throw a big family wedding all while keeping her in the dark about her condition. Awkwafina plays the role of Billi, the endearing Chinese-American granddaughter that holds the family together when they receive the grandmother’s diagnosis. Other actors include Shuzhen Zhao, X Mayo, Tzi Ma, Diana Lin and Becca Khalil.

A conglomerate of producers came together to make the film happen. Producers include Lulu Wang, Jane Zheng, Chris Weitz, Andrew Miano, Daniele Melia, Peter Saraf, Marc Turtletaub and Anita Gou.
