Moviegoing is expected to increase across the U.S. as statewide indoor mask mandates continue to lift and the pandemic trends toward an end. The latest film testing the temperature of leisure activity is director Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
The nearly three-hour pic had a limited rollout that began on Tuesday showcasing at IMAX theaters, and expanded wide to 4,200+ theaters on March 4. Throughout this time, The Batman has grossed a total of $21.6 million with $17.6 million accumulated on Thursday evening. The film will spend an exclusive six weeks in movie theaters before the streaming release to HBO Max on April 19.
So far, the Robert Pattinson-led film is getting rave reviews. Moviegoers give a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics rate the film at 85%.
This version of Batman follows the complex masked hero as he delves into Gotham City’s underworld in search of the sadistic serial killer known as The Riddler, who leaves clues leading Batman to forge unusual alliances.
The Batman stars Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Jeffrey Wright as Lt. James Gordon, Colin Farrell as Oz, The Penguin, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, and Paul Dano as The Riddler.
Competition is modest in theaters at the time of publishing. Currently, Uncharted is going into its third week of release, swooping up roughly $4 million throughout Monday into Friday.
Other films still tracking are Dog, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Death on the Nile, all amassing below $1 million per day. Some other films opening March 4 include Arabic film Huda’s Salon, Bruce Willis’ A Day to Die, action-thriller Nightride, and documentary Dear Mr. Brody.
