That Time When DJ Envy Was Told He Wasn’t Black Enough

DJ Envy has partnered with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson to bring viewers a new TV show covering his ventures into real estate and house flipping, he announced on Wednesday. The Breakfast Club host said there were a lot of offers, but he wanted an outlet that would responsibly teach and empower the black and brown community.

During the announcement, DJ Envy revealed that he pitched his show idea to BET Networks, but received an unexpected response. He claims that about five years ago executives at the Viacom-owned network rejected his pitch because he “wasn’t black enough.” During the time, his family was attached to the project.

“A couple of years ago when my family was doing the show, what I tried to do was look for my people first. I went to BET and Revolt first right, because that’s black-owned and it’s a black channel and BET responded — this was about five years ago — that I wasn’t black enough.”

Clearly bothered by the ridiculous sentiment that the black race is represented only one way, DJ Envy emphasized that black people come in variations of shades and sizes. The BET executives no longer work at the network, but they left an impression on the doting father of five.

“For a while I just never respected BET because when they came back and said that, I was like what did they expect? Did they want fighting? Did they want me throwing the kids somewhere? Did they want me and my wife arguing, and beefing, and screaming and yelling at each other, cursing each other out?”

It appears that the rejection was simply redirection since his idea has now been picked up. The untitled show is expected to premiere sometime in late Fall 2020 or early Spring 2021.

Just goes to show how much the experts really know. See the video on YouTube or below:
