Texas Longhorn’s head coach, Steve Sarkisian, was brought to Austin to win games and recruit. Sarkisian is supposed to bring Texas back to the forefront of college football through the strategy of keeping top in-state talent, while also bringing in top talent from other states.
Even after an abysmal season, it seemed like a perfect storm had occurred. With multiple coaches changing jobs from Power Five conference schools, many of the Texas recruiting targets that had committed to other schools started opening their recruitments back up. This gave the Longhorns the opportunity to capitalize — and they did just that.
During the Early Signing period, the Texas school was able to flip three commits from Michigan, Ohio State, and SMU to Texas, sign twenty-four high school recruits that were on their board, and still wait on several other recruits at key positions. According to a multitude of reports, Sarkisian wants to add up to 36 new players to the roster.
For offensive line coach Kyle Flood, Christmas came early in the tune of six signees on the offensive line. Texas didn’t just recruit “Hog Mollies” with an average weight of 312 pounds, but they also came equipped with a mauler’s mentality and athleticism, giving Texas the top recruited offensive line in the nation come 2022. Furthermore, they are still in play for two more top offensive linemen recruits. If landed, it will give them a total of eight.
Not to be outdone, Bo Davis, Texas’ defensive line coach, was able to produce eight signees. Last season, Texas was ranked 105th in the nation in sacks with an average of 1.67 sacks a game. These new shiny toys for Davis consist of players that are physical at the point of attack, and not just run stoppers but players able to collapse the pocket from all positions, which puts pressure on opposing quarterbacks to improve upon those numbers.
As sports analysts and retired players say, “The game is won in the trenches.” With the move to the SEC on the horizon, Texas is making sure they are more than ready for what’s to come by getting bigger, more athletic, and more physical on both fronts.
Now that Early Signing Day is in the books, Texas’ recruiting class has moved two notches from 7th to 5th in the nation. However, there is more to look forward to for the burnt orange team, setting up the possibility for the Texas Longhorns to enter the top three in the nation.
