Tekashi 6ix9ine, born Daniel Hernandez, testified in court on Thursday in the racketeering trial against gang members belonging to Nine Trey Bloods, a gang in which he used to be affiliated.
The rap star made an appearance in court over three days to provide testimony about the activities of the gang, which is being accused of drug trafficking, robbery and murder.
An audio version of the ‘FEFE’ rapper’s testimony revealed the intricate details of how he rose to fame and became involved with the gang. His voice sounded solemn and, at times, trembled when he described a night in July 2018 when his former body guard and friend, Anthony ‘Harv’ Ellison, kidnapped and robbed him of his jewelry, which included his famous Jigsaw Saw and My Little Pony chains.
Tekashi recounted how he escaped from the vehicle that his kidnappers were in when he suddenly jumped out of the vehicle and ran to a stranger’s car. The car pulled off only to end up right behind the car used to abduct him. Eventually, the driver of the car was able to take Tekashi to the nearest police station. He expressed in court that he thought he was going to die that day. Video footage of the incident was shown in court and is now released on the Internet.
During cross-examination, defense lawyers suggested that the whole incident was a publicity scheme to increase his fame. They used his past attention-getting, troll antics to present a negative image of the rapper as someone willing to do anything for the “clout”.
Before the testimony could end, the defense further buried Tekashi, who is already being labeled a snitch in the Hip Hop world and the streets, by asking him about mega-star Cardi B. Lawyer Alex Huot asked Tekashi if he knew that Cardi B was a member of the Bloods and whether he knew that she had Blood gang members in music videos early in her career. “Correct,” Tekashi admitted. Cardi B recently went on social media, responding with a meme of Keke Palmer saying she doesn’t know this man.
While so many are going hard on the rainbow-colored hair rapper, his story is a cautionary tale of how obsession with street credibility and clout building for social media can go too far. What once was a dream come-up has turned into a nightmare.
