Thank goodness that having a dysfunctional family is a universal theme. No matter what demographic a person lands in, there’s sure to be some kind of hybrid of headaches and hugs within the familial structure. The new feel-good, comedy from Universal Pictures, Amblin Partners, and Rideback called Easter Sunday exemplifies that very dynamic.
Starring stand-up comic Jo Koy, Easter Sunday is loosely based on his real-life relationships with his Filipino family members and how they interact during big family gatherings, particularly the celebration of Easter on Sunday.
Tiffany Haddish (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent), plays the ex-girlfriend of Joe Valencia (Jo Koy). Now turned cop, she gives her former flame a hard time that will certainly be a gratifying and comedic story to follow. Also in the film are Lydia Gaston (The Blacklist), Lou Diamond Phillips (Prodigal Son), Brandon Wardell (Like and Subscribe), and Rodney Perry (Coming 2 America), to name a few.
Ken Cheng, writer of television series such as Sin City Saints and the forthcoming futuristic series, The Undesirables, wrote the screenplay. Jay Chandrasekhar (Fresh Off The Boat, Super Troopers) directs.
Executive producers onboard include Cheng, Koy, Nick Reynolds, Joe Meloche, Jessica Gao, Jimmy O. Yang, and Seth William Meier.
Easter Sunday is set for a silver screen release on August 5th.
