Schools Close, Move To Online Courses As COVID-19 Hits The U.S.

Several education institutions are reacting to the COVID-19 pandemic by closing campuses down and moving classes online or completely pausing the academic year indefinitely.

The abrupt interruption has caused some students to scramble for resources as they adjust their storage spaces, home travel and spring break plans.

Temporary statewide closures of all K-12 schools are taking place in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Most of the schools will remain closed until the end of March or further notice.

Some schools in Central New York, including Cornell University and Syracuse University, will remain closed until April 13, a decision that came for school officials after realizing that the closures merge into Spring Break.

Major metropolitan cities, such as Austin, Atlanta and Los Angeles, greatly known for having highly populated public universities, are taking cues from primary and secondary schools.

Federal and state officials recommend that students consult directly with their schools to find out adjustments to school schedules. Students can also check their school websites to find out minute-to-minute updates regarding changes as a result of the coronavirus.

Check the CDC website for more details on how to deal with the coronavirus outbreak.
