Review: Erich Mrak Cleverly Lends His Majestic Ability To Mask The Deeply Lugubrious Lyrics Of New Single “Girls” With Upbeat Vibes

Singer and songwriter Erich Mrak releases the eclectic and funky summer vibe “Girls” from his upcoming full-length album Glimpse.

The Toronto-based artist released cinematic visuals earlier this year to a vocally grand but melancholic song “See You In September,” directed, shot and edited by Maxym Perron and co-directed by Kenya Walters. Now, he’s back at it again with another single that has elevated his presence in the music world.

“‘Girls’ was one of the last songs we produced for Glimpse, and the initial production of the song started with myself, and Phil playing melodies on an upright piano on the live floor,” Mrak said in a statement.

“Girls” presents a holistic approach to songwriting and music production as the hyphenate Mrak, who penned the song alongside producer Phil Hotz, collaborates with music engineer and mixer Brandon Unis, while the song is mastered by Brad Smith. The aftermath is an explosive, uplifting tone with an underlying message. Mrak’s light-energy filled vocals dive into the woes of relationship.

He inquires with lyrics, “Why you hang with girls who are breaking your heart? Trying to make it work when it’s breaking apart.”

The delivery of ripping rhythms are deceptively misleading as the lyrics reveal that the song is actually about heartbreak.

“Initially ‘Girls’ was titled ‘Boys’ and centered around the dynamic of a close female friend of mine going through heartbreak,” Mrak continues. “While the context of ‘Girls’ centers around a recent heartbreak, the core message of the song lies in the supportive dynamic friendship plays in encouraging someone they can do better.”

Mrak cleverly lends his majestic ability to mask the deeply lugubrious sentiments of the song’s theme with vibrant and groovy tunes that mesmerizes the listener until the ultimate emotion is happiness.

It’s a harsh truth that the best songs about heartache and disappointment are always disguised by a somewhat distracting upbeat tempo and “Girls” exceeds all expectations in this regard.

Mrak’s album, Glimpse, is anticipating release later this year. Listen to “Girls” below:
