Review: Ajay Mathur Sings About Human Connection Amid Uncertainty On New Single “I Need You Now”

The new single “I Need You Now” by Ajay Mathur is a mid-summer’s daydream. Full of colorful instrumentation consisting of a drum-and-guitar band sound and a lyrical sensibility delving into the vulnerabilities of mankind, the self-proclaimed world citizen is on a mission to re-establish human connection in a time of uncertainty.

“If nothing else, recent times have shown us how dearly we need human connection and closeness,” Mathur said. “Admitting that we are vulnerable or lonely is not always easy, but the rewards can be great. ‘I Need You Now’ is about stepping over our shadows and saying it out loud. I need you. Now!”

One unique element about this David Bowie-esque track is that it is heavily influenced by the music culture of India, which is Mathur’s origin country. Musician Kalyanjit Das contributed sounds from the sitar, a popular plucked stringed music instrument used in Hindustani classical music. Sandip Banerjee complemented the sitar nicely with a rhythmic ensemble from the tabla hand drum, also used in Hindustani music.

Mathur wrote, produced, and lent his “honey in warm tea” vocals on the single, backed by singers Adriana Husy and Patrizia Scarnato. Fausto Medici led percussion and drums, and Gregory Schaerer contributed to bass.

“I Need You Now” runs in the same vein of Mathur’s 2020 release with rock artist Paul J. Miles called “Let’s Come Together.” The message is all about uniting mankind. Mathur’s dream for this ultimate world peace and support may be rooted in his very cultured experiences growing up in India and residing in Switzerland, where he was exposed to genre-blended styles of music that have worldwide appeal. Oftentimes, his experiences would translate into personally transparent diary entries turned into music.

It’s the very same strategy that earned him accolades, such as a Grammy nomination (2017) and international critical acclaim, with chart-topping titles, including Germany’s Best English Language Album of the Year 2018 at the 36th German Rock & Pop Awards 2018 and single insertions on the US Top 50 Rock charts.
