Paramount+ Revives Stephen King’s ‘Pet Sematary’ With David Duchovny And Pam Grier

Surprise, surprise!  Paramount+ released the official trailer for Pet Sematary: Bloodlines ahead of the upcoming Halloween season.

From the incredible mind of bestselling book author Stephen King, the original Pet Sematary (1989) followed the Creed family as they embarked on a new life in Ludlow, Maine.  Dr. Louis Creed, a family man with aspirations of settled living, is advised to bury his wife’s deceased cat at an ancient burial ground.  The cat is revived, although its second life is not what it was before.  After the Creed family experiences another unfortunate tragedy, he uses the mystical graveyard to bring his dead loved one back.

A memorable sequel followed in 1992, starring Edward Furlong and Jared Rushton, teen heartthrobs at the time.  While critics slammed the film, Pet Sematary Two is now considered a cult classic.

Almost two decades later, Paramount Pictures released a revamped version of the original film, perhaps in the hopes of reigniting a modern-day franchise.  Pet Sematary (2019) starred Jason Clarke as Louis Creed, Amy Seimetz as Creed’s wife, Rachel, and John Lithgow as Jud Crandall, the good, ole friendly neighbor who introduces Louis to the mystical burial grounds.

The film franchise has been pretty inconsistent at the box office. Pet Sematary (1989) opened to $12M and earned a worldwide box office of $57.5M.  Pet Sematary Two performed below expectations, opening to only $4.8M, despite the rockstar cast, and clocking a $17.1M total, partially the result of not releasing overseas.

However, as the book became a cultural faction, audiences began to appreciate the franchise, and when the 2019 remake of Pet Sematary released in theaters it opened to $24.5M, while grossing $113.1M globally.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, a prequel, rewinds back to 1969 when a young Jud is coerced into putting his plans of leaving his hometown of Ludlow, Maine on hold after he encounters the ancient evil that revives the dead.  The latest edition is directed by Lindsey Anderson Beer, who also penned the script alongside Jeff Buhler, co-writer of Pet Sematary (2019).

David Duchovny of The X-Files fame and legendary Black cinema actress Pam Grier are featured in the horror thriller, along with Henry Thomas, Samantha Mathis, Jack Mulhern, Forrest Goodluck, and Jackson White as young Jud Crandall.

Bloodlines not receiving a theatrical release may be for a variety of reasons.  First, the whole double union strike is definitely prohibiting the star-studded cast from engaging in promotional activities.

Second, there’s a lot of Halloween content slated to saturate theaters.  There’s Warner Bros. The Nun II and Screen Gems’ Insidious: Red Door, currently in theaters, along with the anticipation of Universal’s greatly marketed revival of The Exorcist, Lionsgate’s Saw X, Neon’s It Lives Inside, and Iconic Events’ Satanic Hispanics.  Indeed, there’s a lot of competition this Halloween season!

So, what are you looking forward to watching this Halloween?
