We’ve waited several years for the day that a sequel to the 1980s classic Eddie Murphy film Coming To America would be released. Now, after 32 years, it appears that day is finally near. The official trailer for Coming 2 America was released early Tuesday and there was a lot to take in.
Watch The Trailer To ‘Coming 2 America’ Below:
Set in the lush and royal country of Zamunda, newly-crowned King Akeem (Murphy) and his trusted confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on an all-new hilarious adventure that has them traversing the globe from their great African nation to the borough of Queens, New York – where it all began. Akeem must find his long-lost son in order to establish an heir to the throne of Zamunda.
Directed by Craig Brewer, who is fresh off of the success of the Golden Globe nominated film Dolemite Is My Name, the Coming 2 America trailer reveals an all-star cast that includes Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, KiKi Layne, Teyana Taylor, Rick Ross, Luenell, with Wesley Snipes and returning cast members John Amos, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Louie Anderson, Shari Headley and James Earl Jones.
The screenplay was written by Barry W. Blaustein, David Sheffield, and Kenya Barris. Producers on board include Kevin Misher and Murphy.
Although the trailer doesn’t reveal much to differentiate the film from its predecessor, it is exciting to see the talented cast reunite. The 1988 film that was directed by John Landis saw Akeem travel to Queens, New York to find a wife. Coming To America would end up nabbing two NAACP Image Awards and being nominated by the Academy Awards for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup. Box office grosses totaled $128 million domestically and $288 million worldwide following its June 29th theatrical release.
The Paramount Pictures sequel was originally set to be distributed to movie theaters, but due to the pandemic will go straight to Amazon’s streaming platform. No word if there will be a day and date release for the states that are open during the pandemic.
Coming 2 America will be available March 5th on Amazon Prime Video.
