Nominees Announced For 51st NAACP Image Awards

Angela Bassett, Eddie Murphy, Jodie Turner-Smith, Jamie Foxx and Marsai Martin are among the nominees announced for the 51st NAACP Image Awards airing on BET during Black History Month.

The President and CEO of the NAACP, Derrick Johnson, made the announcement with Connie Orlando, BET’s EVP of Specials, Music Programming and Music Strategy.

“Representation across entertainment and the arts has profound meaning and unparalleled power to shape perceptions, influence culture, and galvanize communities,” said Johnson.

“This year’s nominees have conveyed a wide range of authentic stories and experiences that have resonated with many,” added Johnson. “We’re proud to continue celebrating their outstanding achievements and performances.”

The award show recognizes excellence in music, literature, TV and film industry.

Netflix leads in the TV category with 30 nominations. The major streaming service company also nabbed 12 nominations in the motion picture category.

Nominees for Entertainer of the Year include Angela Bassett, Billy Porter, Lizzo, Regina King and Tyler Perry.

In the Outstanding Motion Picture category, nominees include Dolemite Is My Name, Harriet, Just Mercy, Queen & Slim and Us.

Nominated in the Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture is Chadwick Boseman (21 Bridges), Daniel Kaluuya (Queen & Slim), Eddie Murphy (Dolemite is My Name), Michael B. Jordan (Just Mercy) and Winston Duke (Us).

Alfre Woodard (Clemency), Cynthia Erivo (Harriet), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), Lupita Nyong’o (Us) and Naomie Harris (Black and Blue) are nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture.

The MouthSoap is really rooting for The Breakfast Club to win the Outstanding News/Information category. The show that features Charlamagne Tha God, Angela Yee and DJ Envy is going up against Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly, PBS’ PUSHOUT, National Geographic’s The Story of God with Morgan Freeman and TV One’s Unsung.

The public can vote on each category at the NAACP Image Awards at www.naacpimageawards.net. The 51st NAACP Image Awards will be televised live on BET Networks on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020 at 7 PM CT.
