Nipsey Hussle wasn’t just an ordinary rapper. He knew he had a greater purpose and it was to serve his community. Nearly a year before he passed away last year in March 2019, he went onto the Breakfast Club and let fans know that he was working on a telling documentary about renowned natural healer Dr. Sebi, born as Alfredo Bowman.
“I’m working on doing a documentary on the trial in 1995 when Dr. Sebi went to trial against New York because he put in the newspaper he cured AIDS,” said Nipsey on the radio show. “He beat the case and he went to federal court the next day and beat that case on record and nobody talked about it.”
The Slauson rapper never got the chance to finish and distribute the documentary. Upon hearing this, Nick Cannon decided to pick up the documentary with his production branch Ncredible Entertainment.
“My goal as I dove deep into trying to tell the story — we done went to Honduras, went to Africa — we went all over the place to really just get the truth so we can lay it out there,” said Cannon on an interview with VladTV. “One of the truths that I found that has been consistent throughout the process is that this was a man that was just really trying to help his people.”
Dr. Sebi’s clientele consisted of A-list celebrities, such as Michael Jackson, Eddie Murphy and John Travolta. He was also featured in TLC member Lisa Lopes’ documentary Last Days of Left Eye where he famously treated the star with a holistic and natural healing regimen days before she tragically died in a car accident.
