It’s finally in fruition! The stage play based on the crime drama feature, New Jack City, is making its way to centerstage. Je’Caryous Johnson, the producer behind the Set It Off stage play starring Da Brat, Kyla Pratt, LeToya Luckett, and Demetria McKinney, published the official poster alongside a link to purchase tickets to the touring production.
Based on the story by Thomas Lee Wright and screenplay by Barry Michael Cooper, New Jack City chronicles the life and times of a ruthless drug lord that overtakes an entire sector of a New York City neighborhood, turning it into a war zone. One impassioned police detective with unconventional tactics exerts all his energy into ending the drug lord’s reign.
Mario Van Peebles directed the original film, released in 1991. Winner of the NAACP Image Awards, but overlooked by other mainstream award institutions, the film became a notable cult-classic made even more polarizing by its stellar cast, which included Wesley Snipes as the notorious Nino Brown, Allen Payne as his brother Gee Money, and Ice-T as officer Scotty Appleton.
