Michele Ghee Becomes CEO Of Iconic Brands Ebony And Jet

Respected industry veteran Michele Thorton Ghee has been appointed CEO of iconic brands Ebony and Jet. In her new role, Ghee will oversee the strategic direction and overall vision of the legendary brands that have traditionally catered to Black culture.

“Everything we say will come through the lens of Black journalists,” Ghee said in a statement. “We will ensure there is a safe space for Black journalism to thrive. I’m a little Black girl from Oakland, CA. I’m not apologizing for any of it. Our voices matter. We are History in the making!”

Ghee established her career as an expert cultivator of content targeting the female and Black demographics. Prior to her current appointment, Ghee worked for media giants WME, A&E, The History Channel and CNN. She also created the network BETHer, the first and only network for Black women, during her time at BET Networks.

New owner Eden Bridgeman Sklenar, who is CMO at Manna Inc, states, “We are honored to have Michele Ghee at the helm to steward these iconic brands. With a proven track record over a storied career thus far and a passion to bring her life experiences to Ebony and Jet we are excited at the future she will create. The next chapter of Ebony and Jet’s history will be told for generations to come and having her continue to authentically document, innovate, and uplift the culture will be keys to our success.”

Formerly owned by John H. Johnson under Johnson Publishing, the monthly magazine Ebony was founded in 1945 followed by the weekly magazine Jet in 1951 with the mission to cover issues regarding Black Americans, while celebrating the excellence of the community. Over the years, the magazines became well-known for their prolific covers of Black celebrities and prominent figures. Johnson passed away in Chicago on August 8, 2005 at the age of 87.

Jet and Ebony were sold in 2016 to private equity firm Clear View Group, now known as Ebony Media Corporation. In 2020, the company would go bankrupt and sell the brands to retired professional basketball player Junior Bridgeman for a reported $14 million.

“Our brands’ main responsibility will be to focus completely on what our beloved audience wants and needs with bold informed editorial, brilliant content, and the opportunity to connect with like minded people,” Ghee said. “Paying homage to Mr. Johnson’s legacy means that my team will carve-out and create our own path. We will NOT succumb to the status quo.”
