Christmas delivered a strong opening weekend for the Outlier Society, MACRO and Endeavor collaboration Just Mercy.
The film grossed $109,000 from Friday through Sunday and $227,000, starting the five-day holiday weekend on Dec. 25.
Just Mercy had a limited release opening in only four locations, including Los Angeles and New York. The wide release of the Warner Bros. distributed film is expected in the new year on January 10, 2020.
Based on a true story, Just Mercy follows the career of Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan), a young Harvard Law graduate, who serves to find justice for prisoners that were wrongly convicted. He meets death row inmate Walter “Johnny D” McMillian (Jamie Foxx) who was falsely accused of murdering an 18-year-old white woman in an overtly racist town.
A classic tale of common real-life stories, Just Mercy challenges the viewer to understand the everyday experience of black men and the need for prison reform. Social issues such as, the death penalty, inmate exploitation and abuse, and systemic racism, are prevalent throughout the film.
Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave the film an 80% certified fresh rating, while audiences ranked the film at 99%.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the cast is rounded out by Brie Larson, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Tonea Stewart, and Rafe Spall.
