Marvel Studios Bringing ‘Black Panther’ To Hollywood Bowl For Live LA Philharmonic Treatment

Black Panther enthusiasts that will be in and around Los Angeles mid-September will have the opportunity to experience the poignant, award-winning score that accompanied the box office hit live at the infamous Hollywood Bowl. The Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra, also known as LA Phil, will perform the score created by Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson.

“In 2018, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther quickly became a global sensation and cultural phenomenon, showing a new dimension of what super hero films could be,” a statement reads on the Hollywood Bowl website.  “Now, for the first time anywhere, you can relive the excitement of T’Challa becoming king and battling Killmonger all while the LA Phil performs Ludwig Göransson’s Oscar®-winning score live to picture.”

Thomas Wilkins, Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, will conduct, while Senegalese musician Baaba Maal, who recorded and toured with Göransson in Africa, will appear at the live performance as a special guest.

Göransson utilized traditional African instruments and sounds, merging it with the conventions of classical orchestra to create the epic sound that cradles Black Panther. His efforts were acknowledged by the Academy Awards when the 28-track album Black Panther (Original Score) won Best Original Score in 2019. Attendees can expect to hear LA Phil play popular compositions such as, “Wakanda,” “Killmonger,” and “Killmonger vs T’Challa,” among other titles that enriched the film experience.

The LA Phil has performed at the world-famous Hollywood Bowl since 1922. Annually, the unit performs at least 250 concerts across Los Angeles, including at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and The Ford.

The event offers three shows spread over three days, starting on Friday, Sept. 10 and ending on Sunday, Sept. 12. Tickets can be purchased at the Hollywood Bowl website.
