While Lord Jamar has never been the one to filter his thoughts, he has pushed the limit recently with radical rhetoric on everything from female rappers to his infamous DJ Vlad interview on the “gay gene”. He walks dangerous territory in an era of PC culture. Although, with the stunts of Donald Trump and Dave Chappelle’s latest stand up special, PC culture appears to be deteriorating anyway.
The Brand Nubian rapper recently was interviewed by Bosschick Raine on RapMatic’s Battle Code and he had some choice words for female rappers. “I can’t resonate with what a woman is talking about,” he said. “Can I appreciate a sister that can rhyme good? Yes. But, do I want to listen to a female rhyme about female sh*t? No.” He blamed his ideology on his alpha male status.
When Bosschick Raine tried to debate him by listing female rappers that are respected in the game, he claimed that the likes of Lauryn Hill are not considered Hip Hop but resides more with R&B. He even said that MC Lyte got a pass back in the day because she was a tomboy. Lord Jamar kept it all the way 100 when he categorized female rappers with white rappers and wack rappers. “I like real Hip Hop,” he responded. “Certain themes are not going to resonate with me. Female themes, themes of sucka sh*t. White people themes.”
Lord…have mercy! Is he on a promo tour for a new project or just attention seeking? Either way, he’s not the only one who has criticized female rappers. Jermaine Dupri also voiced his opinion about female rappers promoting a stripper narrative and rapping about the same thing. The backlash was all too strong. He was harshly criticized for his views with some of the biggest female rappers putting in their two cents. “I rap about my p*ssy because she my best friend,” Cardi retorted on social media. “That’s what people want to hear.”
Just like in real life, there are many barriers to entry and within the structure of the Hip Hop world that makes it difficult for women to participate and compete. All too often, people tend to lump all female rappers in one pool. However, there are some good lady rappers, such as Missy Elliott, Tink, Rhapsody, Trina, and more. But, some men won’t even listen to their whole albums to even give these women a chance to prove their skills or show their depth.
