Grammy-winning artist Jody Watley has signed with OZY Media with a biopic attached to her talent deal. The untitled project is in its preliminary stages of production as OZY works to recruit writers, according to Deadline.
“When I heard Jody’s story — one of overcoming the odds, of the power of positivity, of defying expectations — I knew it was one we had to share,” Chris Rantamaki, executive director of OZY Media, said. “Fans will be surprised that Jody has overcome so many formidable challenges in her life that she has never revealed publicly. She is now ready to break her silence and we are honored she trusts us to tell her story.”

Known for her signature big hair and creative choreography, Watley made an impact on the music industry with her chart-topping songs “Looking For A New Love,” “Friends,” and “Don’t You Want Me.”
In 2019, the MouthSoap staff interviewed Watley, who shared stories of her time as a member of the R&B group Shalamar and her transition to a solo artist. She also revealed she was working on a memoir that she would pen between theatrical productions and music releases. We suppose that Watley’s writings will be used as a supplement for the biopic script.
“I love to write,” said Watley. “I’m working on my memoir. I’ve loved writing since I was a kid. I wanted to be a novelist, a romance novelist growing up. I used to write poetry and that evolved into song writing. I love to read. I just finished Bruce Springsteen. I just got the Prince book. I got Rakim’s book.”
