Houston’s very own Lizzo has been named the Entertainer of the Year.
The “Truth Hurts” singer was voted Entertainer of the Year by top news organization The Associated Press.
The last two years were breakout years for the star who topped the charts with hit singles such as, “Good As Hell”, “Juice”, and “Boys”.
Her 2019 album Cuz I Love You garnered praise and critical acclaim and sparked massive conversations about body positivity, female empowerment, and fat shaming.
Lizzo’s unapologetic confidence and heart-thumping music has nabbed her coveted spots on Saturday Night Live, the MTV Video Music Awards, The Ellen Show and NPR Music’s Tiny Desk.
Her talent continues to be recognized with the Grammys nominating her in eight categories for their 2020 award show.
Born Melissa Jefferson, before Lizzo was a mainstream artist signed to Atlantic Records, she was a student at the University of Houston studying classical flute until the death of her father.
She has expressed in the past how the experience left her homeless and nearly discouraged her from continuing her music career.
“I just felt like I was throwing music into the world and not even making a splash,” she said in an interview with Elle magazine. “A tree falling in the forest and not making a sound…I said, ‘If I stop making music now, nobody would care.”
The encouragement of a good friend persuaded her to continue and now her music is celebrated among many.
“I just made the decision to keep going as an artist and I’m so grateful I did, but it was by the skin of my teeth.”
