Melissa Viviane Jefferson, better known as Lizzo, just earned a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts with “Truth Hurts”, which now appears on the deluxe version of her album Cuz I Love You. She recently performed the song at the MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 26 to an enthusiastic audience. After the performance, the song increased in streams and digital sales pushing the single from being No. 3 to No. 1 on the charts.
Surprisingly, “Truth Hurts” was a single released two years ago, but slowly garnered popularity with listeners and radio this year. Despite originally being released in 2017, the song can still qualify for the 2020 Grammys if the live version of the song was released between October 2018 and August 2019.
Who would’ve thought that at one point in her life, Lizzo, 31, considered giving up her music career, which to her wasn’t a career at all. “I just felt like I was throwing music into the world and not even making a splash,” she told Elle magazine. “A tree falling in the forest and not making a sound, you know? I was crying in my room all day. I said, ‘If I stop making music now, nobody would fucking care.'” Luckily, someone in her camp encouraged her to keep going and she did, but barely. “I just made the decision to keep going as an artist and I’m so grateful I did, but it was by the skin of my teeth.” We’re glad she did, too.
Despite the criticisms of people like Azealia Banks and Bill Maher, Lizzo has single-handedly encouraged a refreshing message of self-love and self-esteem no matter what body type you are or who rejects you. A little persistence and faith can go a long way. Don’t give up on your dreams, kiddos.
