Keisha Lance Bottoms delivered a farewell video as the former Mayor of Atlanta relinquishes the title after serving for four years. In the video, Bottoms recaps her achievements in the role and thanks the city for their support.
“Sometimes we get knocked down, but each and every time we’ve always gotten back up and stood even taller,” Bottoms said in the video. “I’m just trusting and believing that the next is going to be even bigger and better.”
The next, being the Mayor-elect Andre Dickens, who is set to be sworn into office on Jan. 3 at the Bobby Dodd Stadium of Georgia Institute of Technology. The Covid safe event will be viewable online at MovingATLForward.com, in absence of a mass social gathering. Bottoms will attend the inauguration ceremony to offer reflections in the induction of the 61st Mayor of Atlanta.
Dickens won the runoff election on Nov. 30, 2021 with support from 64% of voters. Prieviously, he had served in the capacity of At-Large City Council member for two terms. The politician’s campaign focused primarily on public safety, transportation, housing, education, jobs, and ethics.
Bottoms became the 60th Mayor of Atlanta on Jan. 2, 2018. In the years prior to her term, she served as a judge and City Council member. The Georgia State University College of Law graduate worked to end human trafficking, established the first fully-staffed Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, closed off detention centers to ICE detainees, and eliminated cash bail bond while in office.
The beloved mayor left a message on Twitter for her supporters.
“Thank you Atlanta. I love you. For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven…”
