Hollywood legend Keenen Ivory Wayans posted a video on Instagram of himself giving a commencement speech for the Class of 2020.
The man responsible for great content from shows In Living Color and The Last O.G. gave an inspiring speech to the first class in the new millennium to go through a major transition from on-campus courses to online courses and virtual graduation ceremonies due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I just want to say congratulations to the Class of 2020,” Wayans said in the video. “I know this sucks. You worked your ass off and now you don’t even get to walk. But, that’s what makes you the greatest generation of this new millennium. In the face of a global pandemic, you stayed focused, continued to work hard, and achieved your goals. That’s the kind of leaders we’re going to need in the future. I wish you guys all the best. Keep striving, keep smiling.”
Never one to miss a moment for a good joke, Wayans stood up from his chair to reveal a bare-naked bottom. He even joked about not knowing how to operate Instagram, captioning the video #oldniggatrynauseinstagram.
A true class act, Wayans, who writes, directs and produces, has accomplished great strides in Hollywood as he spearheaded acting careers for his entire family.
Some of the most notable Wayans family members include Damon Wayans Sr. (My Wife And Kids), Damon Wayans Jr. (New Girl), Kim Wayans (Marlon), Marlon Wayans (Sextuplets), Shawn Wayans (White Chicks) and Chaunté Wayans (Fifty Shades of Black).
Although Wayans delivery was comedic, his speech brought up a stark reality for this year’s graduating class. With most graduations occurring in May and June, many students will be disappointed to find that they will have to watch their school deans and special speakers on Zoom video or a live streaming service.
To add insult to injury, their families will most likely have to enjoy the ceremony from afar if lockdown and Safe-At-Home orders are not lifted.
It would be nice if the schools invited students to return for an official cross-stage graduation walk later in the year or in 2021 just for the experience.
There’s a silver lining, however. The same reason why many would consider this time bad is the same reason why it’s good. This is the first time in history that students are forced to take online courses and virtual commencements. Basically, this opens up a whole other world of new beginnings and fresh starts. Anything is possible. That has to be a sign that this generation is going to do some pretty unbelievable and unique things in this world.
