Jesus Christ may not be able to get people in the church, but Kanye West sure can. West has been on a crusade this year to bless people with his ‘Sunday Service’, an enthralling worship event in which West converts popular songs to christian songs and performs some of his own music.
Footage of him having a spiritual rejuvenation service in Watts, CA went viral a few weeks ago. He’s also had ‘Sunday Service’ in Dayton, Ohio and at Coachella.
Well, he has taken his popular popup service to Georgia. On Sunday, Sept. 15, Mr. West visited the megachurch New Birth Missionary Baptist church.
When word got out that West was in the building, a line formed out the door pass the parking lot. A total number of 600 choir members and musicians showed up for the service.
Even some ATL celebrities attended church this Sunday, including Jermaine Dupri, Nelly, 2 Chainz, Chris Tucker, T.I. and Tameka “Tiny” Harris.
West brought the music and it was impactful. But, the most introspective part of the service was his testimony.
“You sent your only son to die for us and all you ask for is radical obedience to you,” said West in the service. “You’re not asking us to do the least. How we gonna do the least when he did the most? I’ve seen him work miracles in my life. The devil presents so many flashy, shiny objects. I’ve seen everything that the devil could’ve shown you via TV, videos, car dealerships, jewelry, houses. I’ll tell you nothing beats God and a sound mind.”
Food for thought. West seems to be on a healing recourse that extends outside of Hollywood. “Let’s not be concerned with the opinions of man at all, only of God,” said West.
West’s fans were in the building, too. “I wasn’t expecting him to give his personal revelations as much as he did,” said a fan of West. “I thought it was just going to be music. I wasn’t expecting that but I liked it.”
His wife Kim Kardashian recently went on ‘The View’ and expressed her views on her husband’s worship service. “Kanye started this, I think, just to heal himself and it was a really personal thing and it was just friends and family,” said Kardashian West. “And he has had an amazing evolution of being born again and being saved by Christ.”
Founded in 1939, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church is led by Pastor Jamal Harrison Bryant. This same church is also where the late senior pastor Bishop Eddie Long used to preach. The famous preacher was bombarded with sexual abuse allegations by church members, causing attendance to decrease. He died in 2017. Bryant took over in 2018. It appears that the church has fully recovered from the scandal and is now packed to capacity. The church has services on Sundays at 9:30 AM.
