Just when you thought you could put Kanye West in a box he exceeds expectations and sometimes, confuses his fans.
On Saturday, the 808s & Heartbreak producer/rapper released a very artistic, but vague trailer to the upcoming movie Jesus Is King: A Kanye West Film.
In the trailer, a slow zoom reveals a hallway of sorts lined with dark blue panels. A golden stairway leads to a circular bright light. Background music features a choir singing West’s song “Say You Will” from his album 808s & Heartbreak. The screen suddenly turns blue and a bible scripture appears.
The scripture quotes Mark 1:15, “In the words of Jesus Christ, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe in the gospel.'”
Directed by Nick Knight, it appears the film will have a limited release and be shown exclusively in IMAX theaters.
According to a one-liner from IMAX, the film follows Kanye West on his Sunday Service tour as he visits different cities and their churches to share newly arranged music converted into gospel songs.
The music is featured on his highly anticipated album Jesus Is King. The film will be shown at the Roden Crater, a James Turrell visionary exhibit located in Arizona’s Painted Desert.
Kanye West has capitalized and monetized off of his spiritual movement through his Sunday Service tour. Some critics say he’s making a mockery out of Christianity by using the religion to tap into a market of the Black community who willingly shells out money towards religious causes.
As of late, the superstar has attempted to trademark Sunday Service and released new Jesus Is King merchandise. Although genius, the star is not above a gimmick. He’s also been very vocal about his support for Donald Trump in spite of the dismal disapproval from the Black community.
Yet, Black people are continuing to support the tour. West recently performed in front of hundreds at Howard University and brought out droves of people in Watts, Atlanta and now, Jamaica.
Jesus Is King: A Kanye West Film is slated to be released on October 25th.
