The third installment of the Jurassic World franchise had a solid opening at $145 million over the weekend. The stat makes the film the fourth all-time top opening weekend in the month of June, following Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($148M) at No. 3, Incredibles 2 ($182.6M) at No. 2, and Jurassic World ($208.8M) at No. 1.
Jurassic World Dominion rolled out to 4,676 theaters, becoming the second highest wide release of all-time, and amassing $59.6 million on opening day (June 10). Saturday experienced a 21% dip with a daily box office gross of $46.89 million and a modest 17.7% dip on Sunday landing at $38.6 million. Nearly 63% of grosses were gained internationally, accumulating $247.4 million for a total box office, including domestic, of $392.5 million.
Jurassic World, the first installment of the Collin Trevorrow written and directed franchise, released in 2015, opening in 4,274 theaters at $208.8 million and made a worldwide gross of $1.7 billion. Universal Pictures moved forward with director J.A. Bayona on sequel Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The pic opened in 2018 to a 29% decrease compared to its predecessor, but still managed to pull a worldwide gross of $1.3 billion.
Critics panned Jurassic World Dominion, calling the film out for straying too far from its origins and having redundant plots. Rotten Tomatoes shows a critic rating of 30%, but audiences appeared to be less critical giving the film a decent 79%.
The MouthSoap gives the film a B rating due to it delivering on the nostalgia of the originals through the cast, the epic shots of the largest carnivores, and the non-stop thrilling action of each and every chase scene. However, the multiple reunion hugs between characters Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) and a slightly awkward exchange of unimportant information between Owen and superwoman Kayla Watts (DeWanda Wise) could have been left on the cutting floor. Also, the random appearance of some characters who seemed to effortlessly find their way through a dinosaur landmine is still a head scratcher.
Still it’s worth the watch to see how life has evolved with dinosaurs living alongside humans.
Jurassic World Dominion is in theaters now.
