Jason Lee, the proud owner of entertainment news company Hollywood Unlocked, is not letting up on Karen Civil. The former Love & Hip Hop Hollywood star went on The Breakfast Club to properly rehash all of the events leading up to his riff with the brand strategist.
As the story goes, Jason Lee built an industry relationship with Civil and even had business dealings with her in the past. It wasn’t until he approved the publishing of an article highlighting a deal gone wrong between Civil and rap artist Cam’Ron that the relationship took a turn for the worst. Civil requested that the article be removed from the Hollywood Unlocked website, but Jason Lee refused and instead offered to provide a safe space where she could discuss the issues with Cam’Ron during her scheduled interview on his podcast. Civil ended up canceling her interview.
Another story emerged on Hollywood Unlocked with allegations against Civil from Love & Hip Hop New York reality star James R. Shortly after the article was published in 2018, Jason Lee would discover that the Hollywood Unlocked Instagram profile was taken down. As he scrambled to resolve the disruption of one of his main sources of income, a disgruntled associate of Civil contacted Jason Lee to reveal that Civil allegedly hired him to hack the profile and take it down for $20,000. Ironically, Civil was supposedly helping Jason Lee to get his Instagram page back at that time.
“She basically not only put a hit on Hollywood Unlocked, but my YouTube channel, my personal Instagram, my Facebook, she had sent all my content to him and he had screen recorded it,” said Jason Lee.
When Jason Lee confronted Civil about the sabotage, Civil surprisingly admitted to it. Jason Lee kept the incident to himself because of the powerful relationships Civil has in the industry and he didn’t think anyone would believe him.
“I told Karen in 2018 I don’t know when or how, but I’m going to get you,” Jason Lee recalls. “I didn’t go and burn down the Internet with the Karen [inaudible] because if I would’ve said it, nobody would believe me. Nobody would’ve believed me. They would have been like, ‘No way, Karen Civil with Hillary Clinton?’ They would’ve called me a hater. They would’ve said he’s hating Black women.”
In the transparent Breakfast Club interview, Jason Lee admits to intentionally disarming Civil by accepting an apology Civil made during a run-in in Los Angeles. Fast-forward to Sept. 2021, a wave of accusations of Civil scamming and backstabbing people started to surface on social media. In a scathing Clubhouse recording, Joyner Lucas, Kita Trotter, and Jason Lee exposed Civil with stories of her betrayal. Now, Jason Lee is seeking legal counsel to figure out exactly what to do next.
“When we pursue Karen the way we are getting ready to, we got to go through a process called discovery. Where the $20,000 come from? How’d you file that on your taxes?” said Jason Lee. “We had a meeting yesterday and my team doesn’t want to talk about everything we plan to do legally, but like, for sure, it’s not a moment in social media history. Definitely going to pursue it.”

Although Civil may have been under the perception that the entertainment industry is just a game of manipulation, payments for malicious activity that prevents access to computer files, systems, or networks and causes costly disruptions to operations and loss of critical content may be considered cybercrime and incur civil penalties if it stirs the interest of the FBI. It’s a dangerous ground to tread and if the accusations that people have been claiming end up being true, Civil could have her day in court.
