How Rumors Get Started: Joe Budden’s Comments About Being “Bisexual” Taken Out Of Context

When news broke that Joe Budden was allegedly coming out as “bisexual,” it wasn’t long before content starving bloggers picked up the intentionally shortened clip from episode 485 of The Joe Budden Podcast in which Budden said, “How do I spread this news? How do I spread the word? I like guys and girls. Spread the word. I’m down.”

Once social media got wind of the headlines, people proceeded to make the story even bigger. Budden coming out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community would be a double-edge sword. Based on people’s responses to Budden possibly being bisexual, it appears that hip hop would still have a difficult time getting over his sexual preferences.

On the other hand, a hip hop figure such as Budden coming out, who is known to have a storied past with women, could be incredibly impactful for those in hip hop who have struggled with their own sexuality because of fear of retaliation or humiliation.

With that said, Budden’s comments were clearly taken out of context. It all began with a discussion about the LGBTQ+ community reportedly forgiving rapper DaBaby for his homophobic comments at Rolling Loud Miami. As the hosts explained the repercussions of DaBaby’s words, such as a halt in his revenue streams, and how much DaBaby had to do in order to get back in good graces, the hosts began to question whether the community and Rolling Loud was throwing around their weight. In his signature dry and sarcastic manner, Budden responded with the comment heard around the Internet.

Bottomline, it’s not credible news — it’s clickbait. The comment was not an admission of sexuality or a “coming to Jesus” moment, and that was clear by the criticism that was followed up after the comments were made. It was just a moment that requires awareness of social cues and full context.

See for yourself.
