Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and Crooked Highway really know how to lure the psych with immense anticipation.
Their upcoming child abduction horror film The Black Phone has been pushed back five months from it’s Feb. 4 release date, originally nestled right after Groundhog Day and just a little over a week before Valentine’s Day and Super Bowl LVI weekend. The Scott Derrickson directed pic will now terrify audiences on June 24, 2022, instead.
Based on the short story by Joe Hill, The Black Phone follows Finney Shaw (Thames), a 13-year-old boy who is abducted by a notorious child killer and locked in a soundproof basement. A black phone lodged on the wall of the basement supernaturally connects Finney with past victims of the child killer guiding Finney throughout the horrid ordeal.
The cast, led by Ethan Hawke (Tesla) as “The Grabber,” includes Mason Thames (For All Mankind), Madeleine McGraw (The Mandela Effect), Jeremy Davies (Sleepy Hollow), and James Ransone (It Chapter Two).

Derrickson penned the screenplay, alongside Sinister scribe C. Robert Cargill. Hill, son of infamous writer Stephen King, is executive producer, alongside Ryan Turek and Christopher H. Warner.
While it’s a bummer that moviegoers will have to wait until summer to see this movie that’s sure to have a twist, it’s a much needed move given that June is full of big, family blockbusters, such as Universal’s Jurassic World: Dominion and the much anticipated Toy Story prequel Lightyear, but no horror films to incite our fears.
Patience is a virtue.
