Halle Bailey may be slowly detaching from the identity of being one half of the sister-singing duo Chloe x Halle, but sisterhood still reigns for the budding star. Her latest music release, “Angel,” encapsulates sisterhood with an empowering message of self-love as she sings “Black girl here, Black girl with the Black girl hair / Took a little sunkiss just to look like this / God-sent, you’re an angel.”
The spell-bounding tune uplifts the spirit with a sense of pride while simultaneously vexing it with an underlining sorrowful fatigue that results from always having to remind people of your worth. The heavy lyrics, by Alabama-born songwriter Sebastian Kole (born Coleridge Tillman), are matched with an intense orchestra-laden production, authored by Theron Otis Feemster, straddling between the spiritual and secular.
Wendy Morgan, who has directed Alicia Keys’ “Underdog” and worked with the likes of Janelle Monáe and The Paris Opera Ballet, directs “Angel” using her signature combination of candid cinematography grounded in naturalism and emboldened by center-frame choreography, which was done by Kyle Abraham.
Jannie McInnes is executive producer, joined by Saul Levitz and Shayna Gianelli as producers. Zoe Simonë-Yi is credited as director of photography.
A very simplistic visual, “Angel” consists of Halle and five background dancers — Syera Plitt, Marcella Lewis, Marirosa Crawford, Nadia Maryam, Mackenzie Jarrett, and Kerrynton Jones — engaging in expressionist dance accompanied by stylistic backdrops seemingly of Michelangelo Buonarroti and Raffaello Sanzio inspiration. The final act breaks into a video montage of historic footage showing Halle and her sisters’ childhood before they ascended to musical fame.

“Angel” dropped on Aug. 4 via Beyonce’s music banner Parkwood Entertainment LLC, under Sony Music’s Columbia Records. It’s the first single Halle has released since her breakout moment as lead actor of The Little Mermaid, where she also contributed a remake of the legendary lead singles “Part of Your World” and “For the First Time.”
Her last studio album, Ungodly Hour, released in 2020, marked the last time she collaborated on a full-length music project with her sister Chloe Bailey. Meanwhile, Chloe recently released her first solo studio album In Pieces, leading with singles “Pray It Away” and the Future-assisted “Cheatback.” Although fans speculate that Halle’s solo debut album will release this Fall, Parkwood has yet to confirm an exact date at this moment.
