Tay Money is strictly here for the party and that’s from the source’s mouth! With her new EP Blockedt — led by the Key Glock assisted single “Friendly” — set to release on Dec. 4, the North Texas bred rapper has been steadily working her way up to being added to this era’s Mount Rushmore of female rappers.
Born Taylor Watson, a sassy farm girl with aspirations to become a badass hairdresser, she took a chance on herself when she decided to experiment with rap — her favorite genre of music — in the studio one day. When she heard the result, she couldn’t believe her ears and knew she had something special. Taylor Watson became Tay Money and it was all uphill from there.
Blonde and bold, the white girl from Athens, Texas impressed hip hop fans with her phlegmatic bars, organic charm and animated approach. She put in work, dropping independent projects and singles back to back.
“Trappers Delight” off of her 2018 EP DUH! set Tay Money apart from the cookie cutter rappers that have come and gone. Her oxymoronic down-to-earth Barbie persona and continuous consistency solidified her imprint in music. Then, she uttered the words, “Because a bih like me, really hard to be | Can’t even sleep ’cause I’m living out a dream,” from her single “Bih Like Me.” What followed was a tsunami of views, likes, and follows across social media.
The petite rapper capitalized off of her success by dropping “Fresh Princess,” “Lil Mama” featuring Fredo Bang, and “Ride Around.” In 2019, Tay Money released the 16-track project Hurricane Tay where she would collaborate with YNW Melly for the provocative single “Left Cheek Right Cheek” and DaBaby for the hand clapping, strip club anthem “Booty.”
Talk about applying pressure, Tay Money is the pressure cooker and that steam spread all over the Internet and to the ears of executives at Interscope and Geffen Records, who she would sign with in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I started out on a whole other path and if you told little me that this would be happening I would be like no way,” Tay Money said in an interview with The MouthSoap. “It’s really been so incredible.”
Those who thought she was a gimmick can think again. Unlike some rappers who have caused friction with other rappers to create clout and controversy, Tay Money is not about causing smoke with her fellow female peers. Instead, she prefers to collaborate with them. In the second half of 2020, fans were able to see the rising star link up with two other amazing up-and-coming female rappers, Mulatto for “Brat” and Saweetie for “Bussin 2.0.”
“[Saweetie] was so nice and so welcoming and I consider her a big superstar,” Tay Money said. “She was the very first superstar that was like, “Hey, I’m going to help you out.””
Tay Money adds that she admires women who have made a career in the rap industry, a very humble stance considering how bright her own star shines. When asked who she would like to collaborate with in the future, her choice picks included Doja Cat and Cardi B.
In a world where competition is fierce and fans love pitting women against each other, Tay Money is opting to embrace not only her female peers, but her female fans, as well. Music listeners can expect her to continue to release lit music that make women feel like they’re poppin’.
“My music is for girls that need to feel good because I’ve been through some things in my life where, you know I didn’t really feel that good,” Tay Money explains. “I want them to know that it’s relatable. It’s ok to not be strong and perfect all the time. You can be weak, but here, turn this on and I bet you turn into a whole brand new…BUSS IT!”
Even more impressive, the former high school athlete proved that she is a student of the rap game when she listed her dream team of music producers, which included Atlanta’s London On Da Track, French born CashMoneyAP, Connecticut raised Kenny Beats, and Tennessee’s Tay Keith, to name a few.
On her way to the top, the tatted up beau plans to keep it all the way 100 with her fans.
“I will always be nice — they can always approach me,” Tay Money told Gloria Altonnia from The MouthSoap. “I’m not ever going to be somebody I’m not. I’m not going to sell out, I’m not going to be fake, and I’m not going to do something because somebody told me to. They can always count on me, one hundred percent, to be Tay Money.”
