The cast of the standout feature, Everything Everywhere All At Once, received top honors Sunday (Feb. 26) at the 29th Annual SAG Awards. The Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis led sci-fi nabbed the “Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.”
Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, and Tallie Medel round out the cast of the Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert directed film. The win was followed by an inspiring and witty speech from veteran actor James Hong, who said he had retrieved his SAG card nearly 70 years ago, during a time when there wasn’t much opportunity for Asian actors in the U.S.
“I got my SAG card 70 years ago, my first movie was with Clark Gable,” Hong said. “Back in those days, I have to tell you this…the producers said that the Asians were not good enough and they are not box office. But, look at us now!”
The film went up against some major contenders in each category, including Brad Pitt’s Babylon, Viola Davis’ The Woman King, Eddie Redmayne’s The Good Nurse, and Angela Bassett’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Michelle Yeoh took home the “Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture,” and was clearly overwhelmed by the moment as she laughed and teared up, at one point even taking a spin on the stage. Her win marks the first time an Asian actress has received the award.
Ke Huy Quan won the “Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture” and Jamie Lee Curtis walked away with the trophy for “Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture.”
The multiverse sci-fi has promise for Oscar gold with its latest round of awards including a nod from the Directors Guild Awards and Producers Guild Awards.
This year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards streamed live on Netflix’s YouTube channel, the first for the annual celebration of film and television, and will stream exclusively on Netflix in the following year.
