Millions of gamers had a moment of silence when popular video game Fortnite went black. Epic Games’ Fortnite pulled an epic marketing scheme when in the middle of the day on Sunday, Oct. 13 an explosion set off and devoured the entire island resulting in the map being swooped away in a live event called “The End”. The remaining image was a black hole.
Players were forewarned that there were be an ending event for Season 10. But, Epic Games did not clue in gamers on whether Season 11 would launch immediately. The Twitter account for Fortnite cleared all its tweets and left a livestream clip of the black hole event. All other Fortnite social media accounts left no explanation, as well.
Meanwhile, Fortnite players were left staring anxiously at the black hole, waiting for the next step. Rumors are swirling on Twitter that the black hole event is supposed to end on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 6AM ET, according to computer data hacker Lucas7yoshi. But, Epic Games has yet to confirm this.
Even still, this is one of the greatest video game marketing strategies of modern times. Currently on Twitter, the hashtag #FortniteBlackout has nearly 30,000 tweets.
