Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness must have retrieved its opening weekend box office from other universes! The highly anticipated Disney/Marvel film edged past its $185 million projection for opening weekend, grossing an optimistic $187 million over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The Friday open for Doctor Strange pulled in a reported $90 million, while Saturday box office nabbed $57.5 million. On Mother’s Day (May 8), revenue dropped by 32% with the film drawing in a little bit over $39 million. International grosses make up about 58.9% of total box office at $265 million, making the worldwide gross a whopping $450 million — one of the best during the Covid era. The pic released in 4,534 theaters.
Some bragging rights earned by the film include No. 3 film with top opening weekend in May, No. 7 film with top opening days, and the No. 8 film to reach the $100 million to $900 million range within a short span of time.
As far as how audiences felt about the film, over 10,000 audience members rated the film at 87%, while critics gave the film a 75%, according to RT. Metacritic users, however, gave the film mixed or average reviews, and a ranking of 6.2 out of 10.
The best opening for Sam Raimi, he directs a star-studded cast, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Shelia Atim, and Xochitl Gomez. The screenplay is written by Michael Waldron of Loki fame.
