Pixar Releases Teaser For Its First Black-Led Animated Film ‘Soul’, Starring Jamie Foxx

Disney and Pixar Animation Studios have teamed up for yet another inspiring animated film, Soul. The official teaser started circulating online this week.

From the studio that brought us Inside Out, Up and Coco, the film has a star-studded cast that includes Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Phylicia Rashad, Questlove and Daveed Diggs.

According to CNN, Soul will be the first film out of 21 films for Pixar to be led by a black actor. The studio has made it a point to release content that explores many different cultures and ethnicities.

Co-directed by Kemp Powers and Pete Docter, Soul is about an aspiring New York jazz musician, Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), that is about to get his big break only to fall down a manhole. He leaves his body and transitions into somewhat of a soul. Caught in between worlds, he meets with another soul by the name of 22 (Tina Fey).

The teaser appeals to the passionate dreamer who so desperately wants to contribute their talents to the world.

Docter said that the idea for the film came from his thoughts on how his son was able to have so much personality at a young age.

“It started with my son, he’s 23 now—but the instant he was born, he already had a personality,” says Docter. “Where did that come from? I thought your personality developed through your interaction with the world. And yet, it was pretty clear that we’re all born with a very unique, specific sense of who we are.”

Soul is produced by Academy Award nominee Dana Murray. The film is slated for release on June 19, 2020.
