A southern family has learned that the lesson of love is that it is “Life’s Only Valid Expression.” But, that lesson did not come easy. The must-see documentary Time chronicles the life of Sibil “Fox Rich” Richardson, a mother fighting for the prison release of her husband, Rob G. Rich, who was sentenced to 60-years in the Louisiana State Penitentiary for armed robbery.

Fox Rich is all too familiar with the prison system, as she too served time for being an accomplice to her husband’s crime. The experience led her to becoming an advocate of ending the prison industrial complex, transforming her into a self-made entrepreneur and motivational speaker.

Throughout the documentary, Fox Rich demonstrates resilience as she supports her husband for 21 years from the other side of the prison walls and raises his six sons Rob Rich II, Freedom Rich, Justus Rich, Laurence Rich, Mahlik Rich and Remington Rich.

Time is able to capture the trauma from all sides by exploring the perspectives of the children whilst them missing crucial experiences and memories with their parents because of the harsh prison sentencing.

The film further explores the overall realities of psychological warfare and the effects on black women and children who are left behind to deal with the aftermath of these types of injustices. The coming of age story evolves full circle, however, when it reveals the secret weapon that keeps these families going amid the turbulent times.

Time is the creative vision of rising black female director Garrett Bradley. The documentary would earn her the accolade of becoming the first black woman to win “Best Director for a U.S. Documentary” at the Sundance Film Festival 2020. However, this was not Bradley’s first taste of success. In 2017, she won the Short Film Jury Award in non-fiction for Alone at the Sundance Festival.

Her most recent directorial projects include, TV series documentary Trial by Media, an episode of TV series Queen Sugar, and documentary shorts America and The Earth is Humming.

Davis Guggenheim (Training Day), Kathleen Lingo (Ops-Docs), Laurene Powell-Jobs (A Thousand Cuts), Nicole Stott (I Called Him Morgan), and Radhi Taylor (Sweetheart Dancers) join as executive producers of Time.

The journey to the screen was an eventful one with Time screening at the New York Film Festival on Sept. 20 and managing to pull off a limited theatrical release by Oct. 9, in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon Studios released the documentary Oct. 16 on Amazon Prime Video.
