January 29th is a day marked by significant highlights in history. The famous poet Edgar Allan Poe published his infamous poem “Raven,” the massively giant corporation known as The Coca-Cola Company was formed in Atlanta, and the legendary National Pan-hellenic organizations Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority were incorporated on this historic day.
Now, following one of the most epic fail years to occur in a long time, moviegoers have something to look forward to with the release of the Warner Bros. film The Little Things.
The crime thriller penned and directed by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side), leads viewers on a mysterious psychological journey involving two police detectives, Deputy Sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon (Denzel Washington) and Sgt. Jim Baxter (Rami Malek), as they try to track down a Los Angeles serial killer who preys on young women.
Along with Washington and Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), the film stars Jared Leto (Suicide Squad), Sofia Vassilieva (Brighton Beach), and Natalie Morales (Santa Clarita Diet).
The film itself was three decades in the making. Preeminent director Steven Spielberg was first presented with the script in 1993, but decided to pass citing that the story was too dark. The script would be pitched to the likes of Clint Eastwood and Danny DeVito before Hancock determined that he was the best one to direct the film.
This will be Washington’s first pic since his 2018 role as Robert McCall in The Equalizer 2 and the first time he’s revisited the crime thriller mystery genre since his phenomenal performance in the 1999 Phillip Noyce pic The Bone Collector, where he played a quadriplegic ex-homicide detective who helps his partner track down a serial killer.
It’s a return for the actor that fans welcome as the nostalgia of 1990s film has seen an upsurge since the onset of the pandemic, which drove many viewers to scour streaming platforms for new and old entertainment.
The Little Things is slated for a HBO Max release, available on January 29.
