Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock defeated incumbent Republican opponents Sen. David Perdue and Sen. Kelly Loeffler, respectively. The victories position Democrats to hold 50 seats in the chamber, with vice president elect Kamala Harris breaking the tie — gaining the Senate majority for the party for the first time since 2015, according to the Associated Press.
Warnock, who is the pastor of the infamous Ebenezer Baptist Church — prior church home to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — made history as he became the first Black senator to represent Georgia in its history and the first Georgia Democrat to be elected to the Senate in two decades. His win consisted of more than 40,000 votes in a close call race.
