DaniLeigh Speaks With Angie Martinez About Controversial Song And Relationship With DaBaby In First In-Depth Interview In Two Years

When DaniLeigh first hit the music scene, nothing but higher heights were expected for her. She was cosigned by the artist formerly known as Prince, had done work with musical genius Chris Brown, and created buzz with her knack for choreography. With everything going pretty well for the budding star, she couldn’t see the storm on the horizon. DaniLeigh shared her story in a sit-down interview with Angie Martinez, where she spoke about the infamous “Yellow Bone” song and her controversial relationship with rapper DaBaby.

When it rains, it pours — no one’s exempt. DaniLeigh experienced her turn of adversity when she became the target of criticism over her controversial song “Yellow Bone.” At the time, DaniLeigh didn’t understand the stir she caused on social media, but today she has a whole other tune.

“It took me a moment for it to kick in, for me to be like, ‘Oh, I get it,” DaniLeigh said in the interview. “It was not the right decision. I’ve done my research and I’ve done all that now and I see how sad it can be for dark skin women in the industry.”

DaniLeigh continued with an apology, “It was definitely a learning lesson for me and I just want to say to everybody that I’m super sorry…it just was a mistake. I’m a Dominican woman. I have family members that are dark-skinned. My daughter is a Black girl. To even speak on skin tone, I realized how messed up that is now.”

The adversity didn’t stop there, however. For the last two years, DaniLeigh put aside her music career to concentrate on her relationship with DaBaby — something she now regrets. The on-again, off-again relationship between DaniLeigh and DaBaby was riddled by infidelity from the latter.

“It was toxic. You know, we had our really good times,” DaniLeigh said. “We were in love, like that honeymoon phase, it was really good. We both were kind of in the peak of our careers, too.”

The first-time mother had been living with DaBaby in Charlotte, North Carolina for about three months when a domestic verbal altercation between the two artists was broadcasted on Instagram last November.

DaniLeigh continued, “Me and him were in a very bad place in our relationship. I had left before that. There was a time that I had left before that, and then we tried to work things out, so I came back again.”

She admits that she had drunk a bottle of wine when the dispute occurred. DaniLeigh regrets that the incident was made public, possibly exposing her child to the incident and online discussions regarding her parent’s fight. To this day, DaniLeigh says that DaBaby has not apologized for his actions or for attempting to shame her publicly by calling her a “side chick.”

In retrospect, DaniLeigh wishes she would’ve left the relationship the first time DaBaby cheated on her.

“It almost had to go there for me to let go. I was in it. Who knows if I would’ve stayed if we weren’t on [Instagram] live. I don’t know, like, there had been so many chances that I gave, but now I’ve just learned and grown so much that I’m just like, ‘OK.’ I just learned to love myself so much more because I felt like I really did love him so much that I was just giving it all to him, all my focus. I didn’t even focus on my career. The past two years I haven’t really done anything with my music or nothing. Yeah, it’s definitely over.”

Up next for DaniLeigh, she’s dropping her new single “Dead To Me” from her forthcoming seven-track EP My Side.
