Cynthia Erivo is finally stepping out as an official recording artist in the music industry. The Academy Award nominated actress announced that she will be releasing her debut album Ch. 1 Vs. 1 on Sept. 17.
The album will have 12 tracks that showcase Erivo’s amazing vocal ability while delving into personal topics. Tracks on the album include “Glowing Up,” “Hero,” and “I Might Be In Love With You,” to name a few.
“In storytelling, chapter one and verse one is the way you always begin, and because I believe I’m a storyteller, that’s what I wanted to do with my music,” says Erivo. “That’s what this is about, just starting [and revealing] the human parts of me that you don’t often get to see.”
Erivo will perform her breakout single from the album, “The Good,” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Monday, June 7 and on the Today Show Citi Music Summer Concert Series on Aug. 20. A music video directed by Mollie Mills accompanied the release of the single. Erivo is hoping that the music video will do its part in celebrating love among Black women, while being her true authentic self.
“I wanted to normalize seeing Black women in a relationship on screen, because often it’s really fetishistic,” Erivo says. “This is probably one of the first times I’ll get to just be myself, and be myself fully.”
