“The Breakfast Club as you know it is officially over.” This was the tweet from Angela Yee that sent everyone in a frenzy on Tuesday (Aug. 9).
Many people were distraught that the three-person morning show, that also includes DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God, would be taken off air after almost 13 years. The Power 105.1 radio personality and serial entrepreneur clarified the tweet on-air the following day.
Yelp, Angela Yee Is Actually Leaving
“I am going to be leaving The Breakfast Club,” Angela Yee said. “You guys obviously will continue on and it will be a different iteration of The Breakfast Club, but I will have my own show here at iHeart, as well.”
Upon her departure, which is set for late fall, she will be launching two nationally syndicated on-air radio shows, one based on her podcast, Lip Service, and the other, an original show called Way Up with Angela Yee.
iHeart Asked Angela Yee To Do Her Own Show
Angela Yee said she had been contemplating returning to solo hosting years before the pandemic and even had a meeting with an executive from iHeart about possibly doing weekends while still on The Breakfast Club.
“I had actually sat down with our big boss, Thea, and I was telling her like, look, I really want to have my own show,” Angela Yee added. “You know, I have my podcast, Lip Service, and I was thinking I would be able to get something like a weekend situation — one day ease into having my own show again.”
This Isn’t The First Time For Angela Yee
She continued, “I did come from Sirius where I had The Morning After With Angela Yee, then came here. So, it’s been a goal of mine to have that and so, I thought that I would still be on here and then do that show, as well. But, years later, they approached me here at iHeart. Thea had a sit-down with me and told me that they’re going to give me my very own show.”
Her co-stars confirmed that they were aware of the new development before her tweet, despite what some media outlets have reported.
DJ Envy & Charlamagne Confirm They Knew
“Of course we knew this was happening, that tweet last night was absolutely planned,” Charlamagne said. “Ok, y’all know Angela Yee would never move unprofessional like that, right Yee, you would never do that. Would you? That is what we call planned communication. We know how much y’all love perceived bad news and trust we have enjoyed watching.”
