Congrats are in order for Lena Waithe and longtime partner Alana Mayo who secretly married in San Francisco. The couple got engaged in 2017.
Waithe said it herself when she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The 35-year-old told John Legend, who was the guest host of the day, “We snuck and did it…We didn’t really make any announcements.”
The Chi creator said it was a spontaneous idea. “We went to San Francisco, we went to the courthouse and we got married right in front of Harvey Milk’s bust. And it was her idea, like all good things are. We were driving and she was like, ‘We should get married at that courthouse.’ And I said, ‘Cool let’s do it.'”
The Master of None star appeared to be very humbled by the experience. “It was a humbling day, you know, to marry someone so amazing, but also to really appreciate all the work that so many people have put in for us to be able to do that.”
Both Mayo and Waithe are in the entertainment industry. Alana Mayo is a development executive who has worked at Paramount Pictures and currently is the head of production at Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society Productions.
A native of Chicago, Waithe first made headlines for her involvement on the Netflix TV series Dear White people. Then, she would go on to win an Emmy for her writing work on Master of None. Her other credits include Boomerang, Westworld, and Ready Player One.
Her next writing project, Queen & Slim, will grace the silver screen on Nov. 27th.
