Comedic Netflix Doc Explores Signature Film Tropes In ‘Attack Of The Hollywood Clichés!’

Hollywood knows how to make fun of itself. In Netflix’s upcoming comedic documentary Attack of the Hollywood Clichés!, filmmakers, actors, and film enthusiasts explore signature tropes that have riddled pictures since the heyday of black and white film.

“Thousands of movies are released every year — that’s a lot of stories,” Lowe said in the official trailer for the film. “Stock characters, familiar story beats, and convenient plot devices have crept in over time. We celebrate the clichés that have made cinema what it is today.”

Some of the clichés covered will include the steamy sex scene where no one actually sees the act taking place, but suggestive settings, such as steamy glass, dim lighting, or rain, is convincing enough. The doc also delves into the Wilhelm scream that has been used in Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and several animated films throughout the years.

Another trope, the montage, where directors and editors can tell a story by doing a series of quick scenes in a short span of time. The wide-ranging technique has been used in a variety of pics, including those teeny bop transformation films and tentpole superhero movies.

The documentary, written by Dane Baptiste, Ben Caudell, and Sean Doherty, who also co-directs with Ricky Kelehar and Alice Mathias, will feature commentators from across the film world, such as Andrew Garfield, The Lucas Brothers, Florence Pugh, Jack Howard, Mark Strong, Richard E Grant, and many more.

Attack of the Hollywood Clichés! premieres Sept. 28 on Netflix.
